Alexys James recorded a double-double as the Bison pushed the Terrapins in two competitive sets at Burr Gymnasium.
Howard University opened its 2026 volleyball campaign on Friday, August 28, 2026, with a straight-set loss to Maryland at Burr Gymnasium.
The final score—25-23, 25-14 and 25-22—does not fully reflect how closely the Bison challenged the Terrapins during much of the match.
Sophomore setter Alexys James delivered an impressive all-around performance, leading Howard with 11 kills and 16 assists to record a double-double in her season debut. She also scored the Bison’s first point of the campaign with a kill.
Howard’s strongest opportunity came in the opening set. The Bison overcame multiple deficits and moved ahead, 18-16, before Maryland tied the score. Howard continued to respond, drawing even at both 22 and 23, but the Terrapins claimed the final two points for a 25-23 victory.
Maryland controlled the second set with an efficient offensive performance, winning 25-14 and taking a two-set lead.
The Bison regrouped in the third. Howard built a 10-7 advantage, moved back in front at 17-16 and later tied the set at 20. Maryland ultimately regained control and closed the match with a 25-22 win.
Camryn Shelton led the defensive effort with a match-high 14 digs. Newcomers Tiana Stubbs and Addison Buckner each contributed seven kills, while Zenai Jethroe recorded six kills and four blocks. Corinne Howard also finished with four blocks as the Bison totaled six team blocks.
Although the opener ended in defeat, Howard showed resilience in the first and third sets and received meaningful contributions from both returning players and newcomers.
The Bison will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they host crosstown rival George Mason on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. for their Pride Day match.
